FKUK - SCOTLAND'S EVERYWHERESVILLE

Eric Joyce MP
Falkirk (FK, UK), with our history and our famous Falkirk Wheel, is unique for sure.  But we're also Scotland's Everywheresville.  Sources like the Department of Work and Pensions' Longditudinal Analysis, The 2001 Census, The General Register of for Scotland, The Scottish Household Survey and others place Falkirk in the middle of the middle third of most social and economic indicators - the demographic of the Falkirk area is broadly typical of the nation as a whole. So if you want to ‘take the temperature' of Scotland, or even the UK, Falkirk is a good place to start.

I believe we can learn a lot about how to make life even better for us all, and stimulate debate in Scotland and beyond, by surveying the attitudes of Falkirk folk in ways which make the results widely generalisable.  I've begun the process here by asking 10000 households a range of questions about life in FK, UK today.  1400 individuals have replied and the results, along with my analysis and comment, are all here.  This site will develop over time and your comments will help it become a truly useful public resource.

What really matters most to FKUK and the people of Scotland?  Well, sharing an acronym with the famous Scottish Ambulance Service, it seems to be Security And Services.  Folk want economic and physical security for their families and ever-improving public services.

People are optimistic and fulfilled in their own lives (86% said so) but apprehensive about the future for their children and grandchildren.  Their apprehension seems to revolve around ‘Dark Cloud' worries about World Economic Instability, International Security, Climate Change and the implications of anti-social behaviour for the quality of lives of their kids.

Devolution?  Most quite like the idea of ‘more powers' but don't view it as a high priority and can't say which powers.  In short, people are up for an intelligent debate, want to know how the current settlement benefits Scotland and how it might be improved to deliver better public service solutions on the ground. And in classrooms and hospitals.

This site?  The reviews are phenomenal - mind you, they are imaginary for the moment.
